It's a delightful slab of compute power, which is impressively capable at work and gaming. I think we're really close to that tipping point where this kind of hardware is a better solution for more people's daily needs.

We're SO close...

Tech blogs made a lot of noise about Google Play Games for PC yesterday. The tech announced for porting games looks cool. But we KNOW the idea is to get people playing free games, and then pack them full of ads and purchases.

THEN maybe charge people a subscription to remove those ads.

The flip side of that strategy would be what Valve is doing. Steam will BAN games that force ads on players. Here's a link to their policy on ads: partner.steamgames.com/doc/mar

While Google failed with Stadia, we can be confident they'll likely put more effort into this strategy. It requires less overall investment, and there are fewer hurdles or distribution costs.

Microsoft wont charge Google a fee on monetized interactions on Windows.
Google shouldn't get a cut of XBOX revenue JUST because the app is on Google Play.

Our industry (media and commentary) should be making a lot more noise about companies enforcing better business practices, and we should be amplifying messages BEYOND the marketing budgets of these companies.

Google and Apple have been working for YEARS to chill competition from other app stores and platforms. Now Google is "opening the floodgates" and pushing Google Play Games for PC. Directly competing against Epic, Steam, and Microsoft.
They want the benefits of a more open platform like Windows, but they wont have to pay a percentage to Microsoft the way they demand other apps pay them to be in the Google Play app store.
